May 18, 2014 - Maria Island

"As the weather report for Saturday was atrocious, we changed the day. Sunday was forecast to be breezy, so the venue changed to Vischer Island.

It was not as windy as forecast, so 3 divers found themselves motoring down Blackmans Bay, and through the narrows, in calm conditions.

We headed for the southern tip of the island, and found ourselves in a moderate 10 kn breeze there, but with little swell. Pax and James wanted a moderately deep dive first, to get some practice for their dive next weekend, so we dropped a shot line in 42m on the reef running off to the SE from the island. They headed in first and I ran the live boat.

After they had re-joined me I got my first dive. I was happy with the wall and boulders below it, so I got dropped in 32m on the SE wall.
It was a great dive. Big boulders at the bottom, the wall covered in corals, reasonable visibility, no swell, and scores of fish everywhere. What a joy to be in the water.

After I got back in, it was off to the scallop beds in Marion Bay. James had a go in one spot and surfaced with nothing, after 40 minutes looking (or maybe just enjoying a dive on sand?). Pax and I then had a go at the site they dived the previous weekend. Pax surfaced with his bag of scallops, I got about 15. The difference between being on course sand or fine sand, apparently!

We counted out the correct number for our permits and head for home, in a light breeze. It was still only 3.30pm.

What a great day's diving, in good conditions with great company."
