Jun 23, 2012 - Captain Nemos

"A very frosty 6 degree morning greeted us as we turned up at the boat at 7am. On arriving at Pirates Bay, the place I secretly suspect of being the epicentre of winds in Tasmania, if not the world we were buffeted by 30 odd knot icy winds from varying directions. The forecast was for a mild 10-15 knots. Unrelenting on our quest we headed out towards our target, a narrow ridge that heads out to the east from the southern end of Deep Glen Bay called Captain Nemos. The goal was to explore a large canyon that we had found on our last dive there about a year ago.

The winds were as forecast once we were out of Pirates Bay and we quickly found Nemos and set up a self tensioning shot line on the top of the ridge in 25 meters. Brando and I dived in first and headed down the wall of the ridge and low and behold we were only about 15 away from the canyon. Dropping to about 40 meters we turned into the unknown and explored the dark canyon (the sun wasn't out by this stage). While not as dense as the spongelife on the northern wall of the ridge, the canyon was intersting to explore and had plenty of sea whips and sponges along its narrow path. On exiting the canyon we could see the outline of a bommie further to the south that looks worthy of further exploration.

At about 10 minutes We turned around and headed back through the canyon where we found the cutest baby boarfish before breaking back out to the relative brighness of the northern face of the ridge with its sponges and large schools of butterfly perch. John B and Andrew G dropped in next and reported a great dive was had. We now have ace marks for this site if anyone wants to give it a go in the future.

The second dive was to Twin Peaks. Unfortunately we havent got marks for this in the new boat so we had to guess. We were close but no bikkies. The dive was very similar but about 50m away with large bommies and some great clefts in them to explore. We revisited the area for John and Andrew and managed to drop them right on Twin Peaks (which we now have a mark for !). Once again, a great dive was reported by both.

We all had a fantastic day of diving."
