Jul 7, 2012 - Dunalley Canal

"The weather was excellent for the middle of winter. Sunny and calm, the best weather for diving the canal. We all met up at the car park near the boat ramp and watched the current slowly ease up as high tide approached. We left one car at the car park and drove up to our entry point at the other end of the canal. After waiting for the peak hour traffic to pass (1 yacht), we donned our gear and jumped in. The tide hadn't quite turned so the first part of the trip saw us kicking into a gentle current that turned and got stronger as we went along. The bottom is about 3-4m with the occasional high spot and hole. After about 40 minutes we arrived at the hole under the bridge. The visibility was exceptionally good on this dive. We were able to sit on the and look up and see the cars driving over the bridge. We could even see the whole of the hole. The bottom of the hole was covered with spider crabs and around the sides there were various sponges and anemones. Unfortunately Sandra's drysuit suffered a leak, so we re-joined the tidal jet stream and shot off to the boat ramp where we ran into an eddy pushing us back towards the bridge. "
