Jan 4, 2015 - MV Lake Illawarra

"Eight divers set out from Rosny bay on a sunny day to see what lurks beneath the bridge. It was the eve of the 40th anniversary of the Lake Illawarra hitting the bridge. In the days leading up we had a bit of wind out in the bay and the night before there was a bit of a downpour of rain. Hopes were not high for good visibility and I was having flashbacks to a previous dive where there was zero visibility. It was just after high tide as we pulled up under the bridge having called in to port control Bell bay (no, I wasn’t geographically challenged, that’s where all controls are done now). After a quick hunt we found the wreck and dropped a shot on top. We paired off into respective buddy pairs and down into the murky unknown. The top couple of meters were the usual murkiness and then we hit the thermocline and the visibility improved. Down on the wreck the visibility would have been the 3 meters, very good for a river dive. The wreck is still largely intact been sheltered from rough weather. A number of structures could be made out, ladders, companion ways, winch posts, most covered in various anemones. The odd rare fish darted about, and there were even a couple of crays hanging out. We started on the port side and circled around making our way up. Some people mistook the deck of the ship initially for the sea bed, but soon realised by the drop off into the dark unknown that it was just the deck. As we circled around we could see into the various rooms all of which were filled to the window level with silt. "
